Adding a PDF file to your Community Blog

To host a PDF file for a Blog we will have to make it alink for people to download/view it. To do this what we need to do is first upload the PDF to a freehosting site. This will keep the PDF file online for people to download it from. After we have it hosted we just need to make a link on the Blog for people to download it from. This would cause the PDF to open up in a new window on most peoples web browsers, if not then they could download it and open it from there. Here are some instructions taken from blogging basics 101 on how to host a PDF for Blogger:

"You can only upload pictures to your Blogger blog, you can’t upload
documents or pdf files. However, there is a work-around. You can upload your
document or pdf to a free host site such as scribd.com. An account with
scibd.com is free and allows you unlimited space forhosting your documents. This
helpful online application walks youthrough uploading your documents and then
sharing with your audience.
1. Create a free account with scribd.
2. Click the Upload Document button.
3. Click the title of the document you want to share. You will betaken to a
new page where you can add descriptions, change the titleof the document, add
tags, etc.
4. Click the Publish button. You will be taken to a new page withthat
document.
5. Click on the Share icon above the document. It looks like this:

6. Copy the URL you are given.
7. Open Blogger and go to the post you want to edit. In your post,highlight
the word(s) you want to link to the pdf or document.
8. Click the Link button (looks like chainlink over a globe) andpaste the
URL of the document you uploaded to scribd in the box.

How to place video on a post

2. Highlight and copy the embedded code.
3. Go to New Post and paste in the embedded code in html mode.
4. Click on Show All to give the post a label.

To create a horizontal Text box just under the header to receive links, go to Layout - Edit HTML; scroll near the bottom of the code until you see the following section. You will need to paste in the code that is in RED to create a "false" title box for the links to go into.

Paste in the following code into the Text box that is just under the header. Click on Edit to do this.

Does anyone know how to do forms on the blog? It would be very useful to allow people to sign up for things online. I actually figured out the HTML to put the form in. What I am unable to figure out is how to get the submit button to do anything like save or send me the info.

January 15, 2008! Mark your calendars for the first Washington Horizons BlogStars! Awards

On January 15, the front page of each Horizons blog will be printed out to be judged for the Washington Horizons BlogStars! Awards.

The scoresheet will be posted by January 4 - there will be 6 awards: Best use of Videos, Best Use of Photos, Most Informative Posts about Horizons' activities (Horizons' Labels very important), Best Use of Links for the Community, Best Combination of Horizons & Community Information, and Best Overall Horizons Community Blog.

The purpose of the BlogStars! is to recognize the Blog Teams in the Washington Horizons Communities who give their time and talents to maintain an up-to-date community blog. Community blogs are a requirement of the Horizons Program.

Awards will be repeated every 4 weeks through June and each community is eligible for all categories every time - a community can win every time. Each active member of a community's blog team will receive recognition - Horizons Community Coaches will provide the names of the blog teams once selection is made by the judges.

The new name of the Award for Horizons Blogs is now BlogStars! You probably think a group sat around and thought up this very clever name, but what really happened is that Ronda Gollehon, Horizons State staff, was taking notes for the monthly conference call of coaches and thought that's what Linda and Anita were saying when they said Blogskers - and it was love at first read! Stars! instead of skers - you can see why Ronda jotted down BlogStars! Thank you, Ronda!

KICK OFF/PLANNING DINNER

Tuesday night over 40 Kettle Falls concerned citizens met at the K.F. Senior Center to hear the results of the survey that was sent out earlier this fall. A copy of the report may be obtained by contacting the WSU extension Office in Colville.

We invested time in expressing our ideas for the individual visions that everyone had for our community, and then gathered them up into 4 basic groups.

As the group information come to me, I will post it on the blog.

The first group to share was the clean-up group. Submitted by Katy Herrick.

The Clean-Up Group talked about ways in which we can help clean up yards and businesses in Kettle Falls. We discussed talking about the problem with the city council and holding an annual Clean-Up day or week in the spring.

We also talked about the possibility of starting a community garden. The group would like to gauge interest in the project amongst the citizens of Kettle Falls. If there is enough interest we will move forward on the project by finding land and water and building some raised beds.

We welcome anyone interested in working on these projects to make Kettle Falls a better place to live. Our next meeting is December 19th @ 2:00 pm @ the Kettle Falls public Library.

Blog Awards Update

After all of the 22 WA Horizons Communities complete their Visioning/Strategic Planning - the last one is scheduled for Dec 1 - the use of the community blogs will become a High Priority.
There has been several blog workshops for communities where the community members who were the keeper of the blogs have changed/moved/gotten a job/etc. To allow for the planning sessions and the retrainings, the awards have been delayed.

During January the Vision/Strategic Plans for each of the communities need to be posted on the community blogs. Then through June, the blogs must keep the community informed of the Horizons' activities being done.

For the first blog awards, each of the community's Horizons Blog pages will be printed out on January 31, 2008, and used to select the winners of the 6 categories: Horizons Blog with Best Use of Videos, Horizons Blog with Best Use of Photos, Horizons Blog with Most Informative Posts, Horizons Blog with Most Useful Links, Horizons Blog with Most Informative SideBar, and Best Overall Horizons Blog.

Mobile Technology Van Training

There will a Mobile Technology Van Training in Pasco, Washington. This training will give you the training required to implement the Mobile Technology Van in you community. The Mobile Technology Van -- a full size van that houses a computer cart with 15 laptops and has a satellite dish that provides internet connectivity to the laptop cart that can be rolled into a classroom. All of this is done through the wireless network.

Training Details:

Date: Friday, October 19, 2007

Time: 9:00 - 4:00 PM

Purpose: This training provides a Youth and *Adult partnership team the skills to use the Mobile Technology Van in there community. It is suggested that you form a community team of Youths and Adults to implement this training in your Community.

* Note: Adults need to complete a WSU approved Vehicle training after this training. This includes a 2 hour video and test that you can complete at home.

Cost: $40.00 if completed by 9/30/07 (includes lunch).

Why Labels?

Labels are what search engines and feeds look for, when people are searching by topic. At the bottom of a post, there is a place to put labels (words separated by commas that are what the post is about, i.e., a recipe for banana bread could have the labels of baking, bananas, loaf bread, recipes, black bananas).

The 12 labels, 4 each for poverty, leadership, and community, are the labels that Northwest Area Foundation has asked to be put on all Horizons blogs. Please do not remove the labels.

Horizons Blogs are being Refreshed

On August 15 & 16 the Washington Horizons blogs will be stars at the Northwest Area Foundation meeting in Minneapolis. Washington was the first Horizons state to use blogs - so they have been and will be picking our brains in Minneapolis - all of the Horizons communities in all 7 states will now be using blogs for the duration of the Horizons project.

Also, NWAF is doing a test of all of the WA Horizons blogs and a few in other states to see how well the labels work for finding the blogs. The tests started on August 1.

To make the best impression Pamela Roberts and Anita Raddatz have been giving the Washington Horizons blogs a face lift and labeling, over the last couple of weeks.

To standardize the appearance of the blogs, the Rounders template was chosen because it comes in 4 different colors. Additionally a phrase to explain Horizons was added to each blog in the header or just under it. Pam went online and discovered/added links to some of the blogs that she thought could be valuable to the community. Anita posted the 12 labels on the blogs that NWAF will be using for searches.

Several blogs were blocked by Blogger.com, probably to lack of use; notification was sent that the blogs are still wanted so they should be up and running in a couple of days - they were not included in the list to NWAF because the labels did not get published. The password for a few blogs has been changed so the additions were not made and those blogs were not included on this first list to NWAF. Hopefully these snags can be worked out before Doreen, Tony, and Anita get to Minneapolis

How to do the Page Element: Polls

Below is a screen shot of a poll that was previously posted on the right sidebar of this blog. Because I did not set the date on the poll it ended within a very short time.

I have duplicated the poll again on the sidebar, but have set the date to end in 2008. In this way we can collect a full year's worth of responses from folks! Once you feel it is time to end a poll, simply take a screen photo of the results (on a Mac that is apple-shift-4) and load the photo up on a post to display to the public! - Pam

If you were leading a training session, hosting a public meeting, etc. you could have people vote online as they came in the door!

Can We Do A Little Research?

I had a really unique experience at today's training, worthy of further investigation in my opinion.

Let me tell you the story:

At the end of today's training, as we were disbanding, a thought occurred to me. I thought back to a conversation I had on Friday (with Ole, Doreen, Linda and Ava) about it being difficult to get people for this training, my saying the reason was a general lessening of civic participation, and Doreen mentioning Putnam's Bowling Alone. I thought about Putnam's read on that and asked the group what I thought might be an interesting question. I asked, "How much TV did you watch last week?" I suspected that this group of heavy civic participators watched somewhat less TV than the average, and, after a little hedging, would tell me so. What they actually said floored me. Five of the eight people present (myself included) did not receive TV at home, several because they do not own a TV. These folks do not watch any TV. When I got home, I looked up on the internet to see if I had a fairly good idea what percentage of people in this country get TV. According to Nielsen, it is 99%.

So the odds against 5 no-TV households in the same room at the same time are astronomical, and if this proves to be true about community leadership in general, should affect our strategy and tactics considerably.

I would like to more formally research this, using the other groups doing the Leadership Plenty training. We would need to get this together in a hurry, and simply get questionnaires filled out at the end of training. I may need some help designing the questionnaire, too.

Does this sound useful or possible to you? I feel like I may have tripped onto something important. Let me know what you think.

Pushing Blog Posts into Email

The way have blog posts notifications is: go to settings tab, email tab, put an email address in BlogSendAddress, it only excepts one email address so I am setting up a listserv for it to email the whole list of people. For comment notification go to the comment tab and put an email address under comment notification.

The question I have for people now do they want 1 notification that is a summery of all the post & comments during the day or do they want an individual email for each post?

I figured out how to do email notification of posts and comments. Please post your email address in a comment to this post so I know where you want me to sent the notification to. Brett

I recommend we all set to individual posts. This will reduce the chaos that happens when people hit "reply" to a digest post, and resend the entire digest by accident.

People can set up filters so Horizons PR email all goes into a folder, and they can read it when they want, like a digest.

Hi Bill,

This is done under the Template --> Edit HTML section.

You will be looking for the code that says something like this:

#header { background:url("http://www.blogblog.com/rounders4/bg_hdr_bot.jpg") no-repeat left bottom;
padding:0 15px 8px;
}

You could upload your new header to flickr.com and then link to it there.

I am working on editing videos. I have the windows video editor on my computer, I think it is Movie Maker, and I figure this will serve well, except...

Our cameras put out movies in .MOV format, and .MOV are approx the only format Movie Maker won't touch. I may have wandered into the no-man's-land in the microsoft Apple turf war.

Does anybody know an easy fix? Changing the camera settings? A plug-in for the software?

I was just wondering if this is where I found the picasa hello IM. I did a profile and set up this IM. It is like messenger. I have a few on my computer and I can not remember if this is where I found it. This is where if you know the email of someone you can invite them to chat when you both are online. It says my name and cathlamet so that is why I was wondering if somehow it came from here. It does seem like a good way to individually chat. You only invite those you know. It does not seem to randomly accept people.
So if anyone knows please let me know...I simply do not remember where I found it.

I came home from the conference with a horrible cold. I have been in bed for two days. Frankly, I blame you people.
My blog has moved(I said I would have to). I changed the address on the right side of this page, but for those keeping score, the new address is skamaniahorizons.blogspot.com
This should be pretty seamless, the old site will disappear in a couple days.
The blog and the wiki now link back and forth, so that's good.
The three of us from Skamania are meeting with Ole Helgerson tomorrow to plan what comes next.
I lost two cameras at the conference. I am a dope. I still have the new camera I got there, but I lost the two cameras I brought with me. If anybody sees these, I would be overjoyed. I may have left them in the Lake room, so they may have been cleaned up with the move to the other room. They were in a black canvas camera bag. I am still hoping, but not for long.

Using blogger vs. our own server for community blog

Hi all -- I see that this blog, and the Horizons community ones, and even one of the WSU extension blogs linked from here, are all set up so they appear in the "community" of blogspot.com blogs. Blogger/blogspot.com blogs all have a link at the top called "Next Blog"; clicking on it brings up a random blog within the world-wide blogger community.

I'm concerned that might be off-putting or even in some cases, upsetting, to some people visiting our community's (Mossyrock) blog, if they happen to click that link. I clicked it a few times from this blog and got quite a range of blogs -- from the latest updates on Britney Spears' activities, to a blog of off-color jokes, to one with somewhat "adult" drawings, to some that immediately started displaying those annoying pop-up ads.

I don't know if this will be a concern to anyone else in terms of your own community's sensitivities. There is a way around this -- you can set up your community's blog on a separate server/hosting account. Blogger provides instructions to do this -- it is called an FTP blog because you use an "FTP" program to publish your blog to another server instead of within blogger (so you won't have a "blogspot.com" address anymore). It still uses the blogger software and interface, it just doesn't show up here. I'm inclined to do that for our community blog since we have a Horizons website already and the blog could be housed there. That said, I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has been using blogger to post their blogs here on blogspot.com about any benefits you see to doing it this way vs. on a separate server.

Well, I'm back home in Mossyrock after a long bus ride--hope you folks are all safely home too. I got 10 video interviews with Leadership Track participants done on the bus, so I guess I can't complain about how long the trip was. :)

Just want to say how much I enjoyed meeting all of you, and how much I'm looking forward to working together to put all these great tools into practice for our communities.

I'll get email out to each of you with the contact list by tomorrow evening--didn't have time before we hit the road today, and have to play "catch-up" now.

Hey, here's a thought. How about a "Horizons News" blog we could all cross-link our community Horizon Project news to? I think Pam and Jack are really creating a powerful brand with 4-h news, and we could hopefully just "borrow" a whole lot of what they've already built there. I can think of several good reasons for doing this, not least of which is that having a team project for the public (unlike this blog that is just for us) could be a great hands-on way to practice what we've learned, together, and build more teamwork in the process. What do you all think?

This video was produced as an exercise during the Horizons LeadershipPlenty Training in Moses Lake, WA on April 11, 2007. The technology component of the leadership training was designed to help communities market their local businesses, nonprofits, community events, etc. through the Internet. Web postings focused on photos, news releases, videos, and audio interviews. This short video was designed as a personal greeting to be placed on the subject's local community website.
